Mixed Hardwood Forests

Mixed Hardwood Forests include community types such as hardwood hammock forest, tropical hardwood hammock and mixed hardwood-pine forest. In these habitats, the ground is usually covered with a thick layer of leaf mulch which helps in the retention of moisture. Adding to the mesic condition is a thick canopy with low air flow and light penetration. Due to this damp environment, these community types seldom burn. The USFWS Multi-species recovery plan for South Florida includes characteristics and specific habitat management objectives for tropical hardwood hammock and mesic temperate hammock.
